Having their support and guidance provides a sense of security knowing they are truly invested in our ongoing success.” John Volpe, DO, Medical Director.

“It has been a pleasure working with the physicians and hospital in helping them to achieve their goals.  While the center has been successful for many years, the owners felt a business partner would help to support operations, reduce costs, and implement strategic planning for the next several years as healthcare continues to change.” Carol Stopa, SVP Business Development, Physicians Endoscopy.

“St. Mary Medical Center is excited about this new partnership as we continue to strive to provide the best care for our community.” Maria Scenna, Board Member, St. Mary Medical Center

Supporting Colon Cancer Awareness Month

GYRIG Team Photo 2015_450pxThis upcoming Sunday, April 3, 2016, marks the 8th annual Get Your Rear in Gear (GYRIG) Philadelphia. Philadelphia is the location of one of nearly 50 GYRIG events held annually across the country. The Colon Cancer Coalition, the organization that started Get Your Rear in Gear, held the first GYRIG event in March 2005 in Minneapolis, MN. The initiative began in 2004 as one women’s reaction to the loss of her sister to colon cancer at the age of 46.

Through GYRIG events throughout the year, the Colon Cancer Coalition raises funds to increase screening and awareness for colon cancer. Money stays in the local communities where it is raised. GYRIG Philadelphia has been around since 2009–raising significant money for education, research, screenings, treatment and patient care in the Delaware Valley region. GYRIG Philadelphia was started by Maria Grasso, a resident of Mount Laurel, N.J., who decided she would be a warrior on behalf of not only her father and grandfather, but all people affected by colon cancer.

Maria Photo“After losing my grandfather and father to colon cancer, I decided I needed to do something to fight the disease that took them away from me. I was working as a senior sales director at the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau when I contacted the Colon Cancer Coalition, a non-profit that oversees the continued success of GYRIG events across the United States, with the idea to start an event in the Philadelphia region,” said Grasso.

GYRIG Philadelphia is an annual four-mile run, two-mile remembrance walk and kids’ fun run. The event has grown from 1,200 participants to more than 4,000 with over 200 volunteers. For the past 7 years, Physicians Endoscopy (PE) has been one of the main event sponsors as well as a long time supporter of the Colon Cancer Coalition, in an effort to raise colon cancer awareness. PE centers across the country participate in events such as Get Your Rear in Gear that are local to their community.
